How do you assess IELTS writing task 1?
IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 Assessment / Scoring Criteria
The IELTS Academic Writing Task has two parts:- Task 1 and Task 2.
In Academic Writing Task-1, you will be given a graphic(bar chart, pie chart, etc.). You must understand and analyze the given information and write a report, of not less than 150 words.
#What are the Assessment / Marking Criteria for Academic Writing Task 1 in the IELTS Test?
Being aware of the Assessment and the Marking criteria can be very helpful to score better in the IELTS Test. Each criterion has equal weightage, i.e., 25% each. You are assessed on the following:
- Task Achievement: This criterion examines the information that you write. It scrutinizes the details, the keywords, and the overall content. The word limit is 150 words for this task, and you are supposed to adhere to it to meet this criterion.
- Coherence and Cohesion: The structure of the essay, the paragraphing skills, and the lucidity are taken into consideration. The number of paragraphs also determines the marks. Ideally, the essay should have four paragraphs.
- Lexical Resources: the style of writing is given importance. You should use a wide range of vocabulary, correct spelling and collocation, and word form to score well.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: This criterion examines the sentence structure, use of tenses, and a range of sentences(simple and complex).
#How to score better in Academic Writing Task 1?
You can score better by doing the following
- Analyze the graphic and mark the key features
- Write an overview explaining all the essential features
- Support your points by citing evidence from the graphs.
- Write only factual information(avoid opinions)
- Meet the word limit
- Divide your essay into paragraphs (ideally 4)
- Use a range of vocabulary.
- Use simple as well as complex sentences.
