#Overview of Academic Writing Task 2
The time allotted for writing task 2 is 40 minutes. You have to write an essay that is not less than 250 words. Failing to meet the word limit will result in a reduction in marks.
While attempting writing task 2, make sure your style of writing is formal.
You will be given a statement on a general topic. The statement will specify a problem, an argument, or a point of view. Your task is to respond to the statement by writing an essay.
#There are five different types of questions in the IELTS Writing Task 2. You can be tested on any of the following:
- Opinion Essay,
- Discussion Essay,
- Problem Solution Essay,
- Advantages and Disadvantages Essay,
- Double Question Essay.
#Assessment and marking criteria
It is essential to be aware of the assessment and marking criteria to score better in the IELTS Writing Task 2. You will be marked on the following.
- Task Achievement: Test takers should respond appropriately to the task given.
- Cohesion and Coherence: Test takers should write a well-structured essay.
- Lexical Resources: Test takers should correctly use a wide range of vocabulary while writing the essay.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Test takers should follow the grammar rules and use a range of grammar forms.
#A brief about all possible question types asked in the IELTS Writing Task 2.
- Opinion Essay: As the name suggests, in this type of question, you will be asked to express your opinion. You have to write whether you agree or disagree with the statement.
- Discussion Essays: In this type, the statement will present two opposing views and ask you to discuss them and give your opinion.
- Problem Essays (cause and solution): The question will state a problem. Your task is to discuss the causes and the solution, sometimes just the causes or the solutions.
- Advantages and Disadvantages Essays: In this type, the question will make a general statement, and you will have to discuss the advantages or disadvantages.
- Double/Direct Question Essays: In Question type, you will be given one statement with two different questions.
