IELTS Reading Matching Sentence Endings
How do you answer matching features in IELTS reading?
IELTS READING: MATCHING SENTENCE ENDING
Matching Sentence Ending questions are not asked as often as the other questions in the IELTS Test. However, it is important to study this section too. In this question, you will be given two lists—one comprising the incomplete sentences, the other comprising the possible endings. The number of possible endings will be slightly more than the questions given. For example, there might be 6 incomplete sentences and 9 possible endings. Your task is to identify the correct ending and match it to the respective question.
#Skills tested in the Matching Sentence Ending:
- This section tests your ability to understand the incomplete sentence and identify the correct ending.
- It tests your grammar and your vocabulary.
#Essential tips for solving the Matching Sentence Ending section
- Read the incomplete sentence first and then the endings.
- After reading each question, try to predict the possible endings.
- Scan for endings that make grammatical sense to the selected sentence. The two halves should have the same grammatical structure.
- Identify the keywords in the sentence and look for their synonyms or paraphrasing in the possible endings.
- Follow the elimination method to select the correct option. First, match the sentences you are sure of, and then keep eliminating the possible choices.

#Steps to follow while solving the Matching Sentence Ending section.
Given below are the steps that should be followed while attempting the Matching Sentence Ending section. Following these steps will save you time, and also help you choose the correct option.
- Read the incomplete sentences thoroughly. Understand the meaning of the sentences
- Identify the keywords in the sentences. Mark the names, places, or dates if given. Try to think of suitable endings to each sentence before actually looking at the list containing endings.
- After you have a fair understanding of the incomplete sentences, read the given endings. Understand the endings and try to match them with the sentences you read.
- Go back to the first incomplete sentence and scan through the endings. By now, you must have a fair idea about which sentence matches which ending.
- You will eliminate most choices either because they do not fit the grammatical structure or because the meaning doesn’t match.
- Repeat this process with all the questions.
