The QS World University Rankings® 2020 contains 26 top Canadian universities, which were ranked using a system that evaluated each university's academic and employer reputations, research impact, and other factors.
University of Toronto :
Finally, the University of Toronto, which has dropped one position this year to joint 29th in the world with the Australian National University, takes first place among Canada's best universities. It receives the greatest marks in Canada for academic and employer reputation measures, 17th and 27th, respectively, as one might anticipate from the country's highest-ranked university.
McGill University :
It is ranked joint 35th this year with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States, earning the highest score of any Canadian university for the percentage of international students indicator (71st in the world), with international students accounting for approximately 25 percent of the university's 40,000-strong student population.
University of British Columbia :

University of Alberta :
The University of Alberta has dropped four places to 113th in the world this year, but it remains the fourth-best university in Canada, according to the Times Higher Education ranking. Although mostly centered in Edmonton, the institution is a significant economic generator for the entire province of Alberta, accounting for five percent of the province's annual gross domestic product (GDP).
Université de Montréal :
This year, the French-language Université de Montréal moved up one spot on the list of the top universities in Canada and 12 spots on the world's finest universities list, to take the 137th spot. Originally established in 1878 as a satellite campus of the Université Laval, it today boasts a total enrollment of around 66,768 students, including those enrolled in linked schools.
McMaster University :
McMaster University, which is based in Hamilton, Ontario, and is particularly well-known for its famous medical school, has risen six places to equal 140th in the world in 2020, according to the Times Higher Education ranking.
University of Waterloo :
The University of Waterloo has dropped 10 places to equal 173rd in this year's international rankings, but it still ranks in the top 100 for the citations per faculty member indicator, which is the highest in the world. It was founded in 1956, making it one of the country's more recent institutions in terms of age.
Western University :
For the citations per faculty member indicator, Western University, which is located in London, Ontario, moves up three spots to rank 211st globally in 2020. Western University also has the highest score among Canada's elite universities, coming in at 77th overall.
University of Calgary :
The University of Calgary has dropped four places to rank 233rd in the world in 2020, according to the World University Rankings. Although it was originally established in 1944 as a branch campus for the University of Alberta in Calgary, it now has five campuses across the world, including one in Doha, Qatar that specializes in nursing.
Queen’s University :
Queen's University, based in Kingston, Ontario, and ranked joint 239th in the world and 10th in Canada, maintains its status as one of the world's oldest institutions, having been established in 1841, 26 years before the founding of the country of Canada itself.
