The universities in Switzerland have been known to rank among the best in the world. It is the home of CERN, the world’s largest particle physics research facility. It has also been the home of many Nobel Prize-winning researchers.

Studying abroad brings forth different needs for different students. Influencing factors could vary from how study abroad fits into your curriculum back home, to personal preferences, to the cost of your stay. Application Process

  • Bachelor’s degrees are full-time courses with a maximum of three years duration in Switzerland. However, specializations like medical and information technology may take up to five years. In a Swiss bachelor’s degree, there are major and minor optional subjects.
  • Choose your University and Program.
  • Check the admission requirements: Each university sets its own admissions criteria. For specific information, applicants must therefore contact the admissions office of the university of their choice directly. Also, you are required to pay an application fee.
  • The application deadlines may vary. Please visit the university's official website for specific information.
  • An upper secondary school-leaving certificate is required which is considered equivalent to the Swiss Matura/Maturité/Maturità.
  • Documents required for admission: curriculum vitae; transcripts of grades for the three last years of High School; a photocopy of identity card/ passport; language certificates (German, English, Italian); proof of the payment of the application fee.
  • A Proof of adequate financial means to cover living costs in Switzerland for the duration of your studies (provide evidence of having 21,000 CHF or 19,200 EUR at the beginning of each year of your studies)
  • Applicants will receive an official (LOA) letter of acceptance from the University, if they are accepted.
  • After receiving an acceptance letter, you will need to apply for a visa. International students living outside of EU/EFTA countries need to get a student visa. Students can apply at the local Swiss embassy or consulate in their home country. After arriving in Switzerland, they also need to apply for a residence permit.
  • The master’s degrees in Switzerland are usually completed within two years.
  • Applicants will need to apply online on the university’s website.
  • IELTS score: 6 or more/ TOEFL score: 90 or more.
  • Applicants will need to submit their official transcripts at all academic levels, a copy of degree certificates, proof of academic accomplishments, a chronological CV, proof of language proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL score), proof of German language proficiency if applicable, passport, letters of recommendation and motivation letter.
  • 2-3 years of work experience is preferred, but not compulsory.
  • A GRE or GMAT score may be required for a specific Master's degree.
  • Applicants will need to pay the application fees online. Your application will be reviewed by the admissions committee once it has been submitted successfully.
  • Applicants will be required to apply for a visa at the Swiss embassy. You must start the visa application process at least 3 months in advance before you are set to leave for college.
  • Once you reach Switzerland, you will have 14 days to register at the local Residents’ Registration Office and apply for a residence permit.
  • Ph.D. programs in Switzerland are of two types, General Ph.D. and Structured PhDs. Doctoral programs are completed within five years.
  • Before applying for a Ph.D. degree, you need to have a master’s degree in a pertinent field.
  • In order to pursue a Ph.D. program in Switzerland, you would need to prove your language proficiency in the language of instruction.
  • Documents required: Valid passport (for 3 months beyond the duration of your degree program); Documents proving your affordability to live and study in Switzerland; CV; Letter of Motivation; Healthcare Insurance; Copies of previous studies; A signed letter committing that you will leave Switzerland after your studies.
  • In most cases for Ph.D. applications, there are no deadlines in Switzerland. International students, outside the EU / EEA, on the other hand, should apply as soon as possible to ensure enough time for the visa application to be processed.
  • Student Visa: Students from outside the EU or the three EEA countries (Lichtenstein, Iceland, and Norway) will need it to study in Switzerland.
