The IELTS Speaking Test has three parts; each assesses a different skill set. The time allotted for the Test 11-15 minutes. The Test pattern is the same for the Academic and General papers.

What is the Assessment / Marking Criteria for IELTS Speaking Test?

There are four assessment criteria for the IELTS Speaking Test. They are as follows:

-Speaks fluently, pauses are content-related and not language-related

-Develops the topic coherently and appropriately

-Uses a wide range of vocabulary and conveying the intended meaning.

-Accurate and appropriate use of idioms and paraphrases.

Uses a wide range of structures.

-Most sentences are error-free. Little to no grammar errors.

Uses a wide range of pronunciation features.

-Accent does not affect clarity.

Band 7

-Speaks at length effortless and coherently.

-May face language-related hesitations, uses relevant connectives.

-Use a range of vocabulary.

-Uses common idioms. Appropriate use of paraphrases.

Uses a range of structures.

-Most sentences are error-free, however, makes occasional grammar mistakes.

Uses all favorable features of band 6 and some of band 8.

Band 6

-Tries to speak at length, may have difficulty maintaining coherency

-occasional reputation and self-correction

-uses connectives but not always appropriately.

-Uses a range of vocabulary, but not always appropriately.

-uses some paraphrases.

Limited use of structures.

Frequent grammar error, however, without changing the meaning of the sentences.

-Uses an appropriate range of pronunciation features but has a mixed control over it.

-Occasional mispronunciation of words reducing clarity. However, this doesn't affect the meaning of the sentences.

Band 5

-Fluent while delivering a simple speech, has difficulty while providing a complicated address.

Overuse of connectives. Is repetitive and often makes self-corrections.

-Uses limited vocabulary.

-Uses paraphrase but not always appropriately.

-Uses basic structures. Frequent grammar errors, sometimes changing the meaning of the sentences.

-Uses limited pronunciation features, with a mixed control.

-Inappropriate usage of words
