What are the tips for listening in IELTS?

Academics and General papers have the same Listening Test and are assessed on the same criteria.
The Test consists of 40 questions, 10 per section. The listening test is divided into 4 different sections with increasing levels of difficulty.

Each section of the IELTS Test focuses on a specific theme. Here is an overview of all the sections in the IELTS Listening test.
Section 1: in the first section, you will hear two people conversing about making a booking or an appointment(e.g., booking tickets for a trip).
Section 2: in the second section, you will hear a monologue about a non-academic subject(usually a commentator or a host).
Section 3: in section 3, there will be a group of people discussing academic subjects (usually students discussing an assignment).
Section 4: in this section, you will again hear a monologue but on an academic subject. (e.g., lecturer teaching his/her students).

There are several types of questions asked in the IELTS Listening Test. Here is a list of possible questions that can be requested.

#Essential tips

The recording will only be played once. You will have to focus and listen to it attentively. It will help if you improve your general listening skill. Listen to radio commentary, television commentary, solve listening exercises.
- You will hear different accents in the audios, e.g., British accent, American accent, and Australian accent. Try to familiarize yourself with all these accents.

You will be marked on spellings. Wrong spelling will not fetch you any marks. Make sure all your spellings are correct.

It is not essential to comprehend everything that is being said. The dialogues or the monologues tend to give out a lot of information. You have to focus on the specific information that is asked in the question.

Be focused while listening to the audio; it will be played only once

The answers appear in the order they are heard in the audio, so look out for that.

Adhere to the word limit. When the question type changes; even the word limit changes. So make sure you read the instructions carefully before attempting the questions.

Do not leave a question unanswered. If you find it challenging to answer a particular question, make a calculated guess.

You will be asked to transfer the answers at the end of the test. Make sure you transfer the answer accurately.
