How to Prepare for IELTS Academic Reading - 7 Band +
IELTS Reading Tips: How can I improve my score
How to prepare for IELTS - Reading Tips to score Band 7+ (Academic)
In Academic Reading, you will get three passages. Ranging from simple to medium to difficult. 60 minutes are allotted for this section and there are 40 questions. The marks are out of 40. This means one mark per question.
How to deal with the reading section wisely ensuring to finish the section in time and obtaining maximum marks.
#Following are the tips to follow to prepare for IELTS Reading:
1) Please Do Not attempt to read the entire passage word by word. This is a wrong strategy and it will waste a lot of your valuable time in the exam. The texts are too long, around 2750 words. On average, a person can read around 200 words per minute, this means you will need 20 minutes just to read the passages. That leaves you with only 40 minutes to answer all the 40 questions. Supposedly, getting only a minute to answer every question! Now this can be difficult, as you have to read the questions, understand them, and search for the correct answers. Doing all this in a minute can be a real challenge.
2) First of all, begin reading the questions- Read carefully all the questions word by word.
3) Underline all the keywords and the key information in every question.
4) Go back to question No 1. Read the question again. Understand what the question is and what you are expected to write.
5) Now go to the passage, scan the text for your chosen words, and match that keyword in the passage. Underline them. Your answer to the first question will be around that keyword.
Please note: All the questions are composed in the order of appearance in the text. So, it is advised you answer questions sequentially.
6) For Q1 scan the beginning of your text. Do not read the text, but scan the text. When you find your keyword in the text, your answer will be around that word. Read it and write the correct answer.
7) Follow the same pattern for all eleven types of questions in all passages.
8) Do not panic if the topic is unfamiliar to you. You cannot be familiar with every topic. You cannot be an expert
in every field - Literature or Science. The answers are all in the passage. You are not expected to use your knowledge. Stay calm, composed, and logically manage the section.
9)Pay extra attention to your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Do not use the wrong form of the verb or singular instead of plural. Do not capitalize words that are not meant for capitalizing. You may lose that mark.
10) During your practice test, get acquainted with the different types of questions. This will help you to navigate through the text faster and to analyze how much time to spend on every type. Time yourself when you are practicing. This will show how efficient you are.
11) Develop your speed reading skills and ability to read quickly, this will help you save a large amount of your time. The time saved can be used to check your answers and your spelling.
12) Improve your vocabulary. Learn new words daily and try to use them in your day-to-day sentences. Keep revising them over and over.
13) Listen to BBC news and read good British newspapers e.g. The Economist.
These are some excellent strategies for band 7+. Follow them strictly you will get good results!
