IELTS Listening Form Completion Tips
What are the tips for IELTS listening?
IELTS LISTENING FORM COMPLETION
Academics and General papers have the same listening test and are assessed on the same criteria.
The test consists of 40 questions, 10 per section. The listening test is divided into four different sections with increasing levels of difficulty.
You will find the Form Completion questions in the first section. In this question, you will be given a form, and your task is to fill in the missing information after listening to the audio clip.
#Essential tips to remember while answering the Form Completion questions.
-
Read the details in the form first. You must read the details in the form before you listen to the audio. This will help you catch the keywords and critical information.
-
Familiarize yourself with different accents. The information readout can be in any accent, usually British, American, Australian.
-
You must do three things simultaneously. That is, you should listen to the audio, read the details and look out for crucial information all at once.
-
Attempt all questions. Even if you feel that you are unsure about a particular question, still attempt it. It's better to guess than leave a question unanswered.
-
Make sure your spellings are correct. Only correct spellings will fetch you marks, so ensure that all your spellings are correct.
#Helpful strategies for solving the Form Completion questions.
Read the instructions.
You must read the instructions carefully. Take particular note of the word limit. The instructions can state, "write no more than two words," or "write a number."
Underline the keywords.
Underlining the keywords is very important. Keywords will guide you towards the correct information.
Look out for the information.
Once you read the instructions and the questions, you must lookout for the missing information. The missing information usually is factual, e.g., dates, phone numbers, credit card numbers, name of a place, surname, etc.
Think of Synonyms and Paraphrases.
You will find that the examiners use a lot of synonyms and paraphrases. You will rarely locate the exact word you were looking for. It is essential to understand that you must look out for the meaning that fits the context and the actual word.
When you underline the keywords, you must also think of the possible synonyms that can be used in the audio clip.
Be aware of the distractors.
Words like "but, " "however," are called distractors. They change the meaning of the previous sentences.
You will find that the speaker uses a lot of distractors.
