IELTS Listening Summary Completion Tips
How can I solve IELTS summary completion?
IELTS LISTENING SUMMARY COMPLETION
The Academic and General papers have the same Listen Test. The test is divided into 4 sections, each having 10 questions. The total time allotted for the test is 40 minutes, 30 minutes to answer the questions, and 10 minutes to transfer the answers.
One of the questions asked in the IELTS Listening Test is Summary Completion. In this question, you will be given a summary of the audio clip. You can expect this question in the 4th section.
#Essential tips to remember while answering the Summary Completion question.
-
Read the instructions carefully. Take particular note of the word limit. For example, the instructions can say " write only one word", or "not more than two words".
-
Answers follow a particular order. So you will hear the answer to the 2nd question before you listen for the 3rd question.
-
Check your spellings. Only correct spellings fetch you marks, so make sure your spellings are correct.
-
You will get some time before you begin to listen to the recording. Utilize this time to read and understand the question.
-
Attempt all questions. Even if you feel that you are unsure about a particular question, still attempt it. It's better to guess than leave a question unanswered.
What are some of the useful Strategies to apply while solving the IELTS Summary Completion question.
Read the question first.
Read the questions before listening to the audio clip. By doing so, you will get a general idea about what to expect in the recording.
Highlight the keywords
While reading the summary, it will be best that you highlight the keywords. The keywords will help you identify and locate the correct answer.
Predict the answers
When you read the questions, you should try and predict which form of the word will fit the blank. Will it be a noun, adjective, adverb, etc.?
When you hear the audio, you will quickly be able to locate the word.
Think of Synonyms and paraphrases
The summary completion question is all about synonyms and paraphrases. In this question, you will get a summary of the audio clip. While reading the question, underline the keywords and think of their possible synonyms and paraphrases.
Be aware of the distractors.
Words like "but, " "however," are called distractors. They change the meaning of the previous sentences.
You will find that the speaker uses a lot of distractors.
For example, it was estimated that the building would take three years to complete. However, because of the delays caused by the administration, it took five years.
Transfer the answers accurately.
You will be given 10 minutes at the end of the Test to transfer your answers. Usually, you will be asked to write the letter and not the word of the correct answer. It would be best if you wrote 'A,' or 'B' instead of the word.
