ABOUT

Hammond, Louisiana is home to Southeastern Louisiana University (Southeastern), a public institution of higher education. Linus A. Sims established the institution in 1925 under the name Hammond Junior College. In 1928, when the institution was renamed Southeastern Louisiana College, Sims was successful in having the college's campus relocated to the north side of Hammond. In 1970, it became an officially recognised university. There were 14,298 students registered for the upcoming fall 2019 semester. Southeastern University was one of the colleges in the United States that experienced the fastest growth during the 1990s. The university is the second largest in the state of Louisiana, surpassed only by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Louisiana State University. Green and gold are the official colours of Southeastern, and the school's mascot is a lion by the name of Roomie. The athletic programmes at Southeastern compete in NCAA Division I (Football Championship Subdivision for football) and are members of the Southland Conference.
