Lake Charles, Louisiana is home to McNeese State University, a public institution of higher education. After being established in 1939 under the name Lake Charles Junior College, the institution was later renamed McNeese Junior College in honour of John McNeese, an early educator in the area. The current name was selected and implemented in 1970. The University of Louisiana System includes McNeese, which holds the distinction of being a Master's University in its own right. The university has only a limited number of students accepted each year and is comprised of six different colleges and the Doré School of Graduate Studies. McNeese State University possesses accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and all academic programmes at the university possess accreditation from the national boards that oversee those fields of study.
