Louisiana Tech University is a public research university located in Ruston, Louisiana. It is also referred to as Louisiana Tech, La. Tech, or simply Tech. It is considered to be a "R2: Doctoral University – High research activity" institution and is a component of the University of Louisiana System. During the height of the Second Industrial Revolution, in 1894, Louisiana Tech was initially established as the Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana. The original purpose of the college was to educate students in the arts and sciences with the end goal of establishing an industrial economy in post-Reconstruction Louisiana, so the college's original mission statement read as follows: In 1898, after another four years had passed, the state constitution amended itself to change the name of the school to Louisiana Industrial Institute. In order to reflect the institution's growth into a more comprehensive educational centre for technology, the college's name was changed to the Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1921. In the 1960s, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute worked to desegregate its student body. Because it met the requirements to be classified as a research university, in 1970 the institution formally changed its name to Louisiana Tech University. During the Fall 2018 academic quarter, Louisiana Tech enrolled a total of 12,463 students across its five academic colleges, with 1,282 of those students participating in the graduate school. Classes are also held at the Louisiana Tech University Shreveport Center, the Academic Success Center in Bossier City, the Barksdale Air Force Base Instructional Site, and the CenturyLink campus in Monroe, in addition to the primary campus in Ruston. Louisiana Tech is a member of Conference USA in the Football Bowl Subdivision and has a total of 16 varsity sports teams competing at the NCAA Division I level (7 men's teams and 9 women's teams). The university is most famous for its football team, the Bulldogs, and its women's basketball programme, the Lady Techsters, which has won three national championship titles (1981, 1982, and 1988) and has made 13 appearances in the Final Four over the course of the program's history.
