Private research university Tulane University is located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Its full name is Tulane University of Louisiana. The Medical College of Louisiana was established in 1834 by seven young doctors, and the state government transformed it into the University of Louisiana in 1847. Under the contributions of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb between 1884 and 1887, the college changed its status to private. In the Association of American Universities, Tulane is the ninth-oldest private institution. The Tulane University Law School is the 12th-oldest law school in the country, and the Tulane University Medical School is the 15th-oldest medical school. Since 1958, Tulane has belonged to the Association of American Universities and is categorized as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" institutions.
