ABOUT
Louisiana State University, also known simply as LSU, is a public land-grant research university located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Its official name is Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, but most people just refer to it as LSU. Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy was the original name given to the university when it was established in 1860 close to Pineville in Louisiana. The current LSU main campus was established in 1926, consists of more than 250 buildings built in the style of Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, and occupies a 650-acre (260 ha) plateau on the banks of the Mississippi River. The main campus historic district was established in 1926. LSU is not only the most comprehensive university in Louisiana but also the flagship institution of both the Louisiana State University System and the state of Louisiana, making it the state's most prestigious educational institution. In 2021, the university had over 28,000 students enrolled in its undergraduate programmes and over 4,500 students enrolled in its graduate programmes across its 14 schools and colleges. Several of LSU's graduate schools, including the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and the E. J. Ourso College of Business, have been honoured with national recognition in their respective areas of academic expertise. It falls under the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." LSU is also well-known for its extensive research facilities, which are responsible for the administration of approximately 800 sponsored research projects. These projects receive funding from organisations such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. LSU is one of only eight universities in the United States that offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes in addition to dental, law, veterinary, and medical education. There are only about 30 schools of veterinary medicine across the United States, and the only one in the state of Louisiana is the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
