Baton Rouge, Louisiana is home to Southern University and A&M College, also known simply as Southern University, Southern, SUBR, or SU. This institution is a public, historically black, land-grant university. It is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the flagship institution of the Southern University System, in addition to being the most prestigious historically black college or university (HBCU) in the state of Louisiana. An agricultural experimental station is located five miles to the north of the main campus on Scott's Bluff in the northern part of Baton Rouge. This station occupies an additional 372 acres of land and has a view of the Mississippi River. The main campus itself covers 512 acres. In NCAA Division I, Southern University competes as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with all 13 of its intercollegiate athletics teams, which are referred to collectively as the Jaguars. Since 1947, the well-known collegiate marching band known as the Human Jukebox has been honouring the university in its performances since then.
