Columbia, South Carolina is home to the public research institution known as the University of South Carolina (often abbreviated as USC, U of SC, South Carolina, or SC). Its main campus is located in downtown Columbia on more than 359 acres (145 hectares) of land and is not too far from the State House in South Carolina. It also has seven satellite campuses located throughout the state. According to the "R1: Doctoral Universities with Highest Research Activity" classification, this university is one of the best in its field. Additionally, it is home to the world's largest Ernest Hemingway collection as well as the largest collection of Robert Burns and Scottish literature items that can be found outside of Scotland. Columbia University, which was originally established in 1801 as South Carolina College, serves as the flagship campus of the University of South Carolina System. It is home to more than 350 academic programmes that lead to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees and is comprised of 14 colleges and schools that are accredited to award degrees. The university has a total enrolment of over 52,000 students, with more than 35,000 on the main campus located in Columbia as of the fall 2019 semester, making it the largest university in the state of South Carolina. In addition, USC has several thousand prospective students enrolled in various programmes at the technical colleges located in the surrounding area. On the Columbia University campus, there are professional schools for fields like as business, engineering, law, medicine, pharmacy, and social work.
