Greenville, South Carolina, United States is home to the prestigious private liberal arts university that is Furman University. Furman University is the oldest private school of higher education in the state of South Carolina. It was established in 1826 and was given its name in honour of Richard Furman, a clergyman. In 1992, the institution transitioned from a religiously affiliated college to a secular university while retaining the motto "For Christ and Learning." On its 750-acre (304 ha) campus, it has roughly 2,700 students enrolled as undergraduates and 200 students enrolled as graduate students.
