COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON

In Charleston, South Carolina, there is a public liberal arts college called The College of Charleston (commonly referred to as CofC or Charleston). It is the oldest college in South Carolina, the 13th-oldest higher education institution in the US, and the oldest municipal college in the world. It was founded in 1770 and granted its charter in 1785. The college was founded by three future Declaration of Independence signatories (Thomas Heyward Jr., Arthur Middleton, and Edward Rutledge) as well as three future Constitutional signatories (Charles Pinckney, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and John Rutledge).
