SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

Located in Buena Vista, Virginia, Southern Virginia University, also known as SVU, is a private university that focuses on the liberal arts. Despite the fact that the college is not officially connected with any particular religion, it adheres to the principles taught by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). It first opened its doors in 1867 as a school for girls and has since evolved into a private, coeducational university offering a full four years of study. According to the Carnegie Classification, it is a very small college that only offers baccalaureate degrees and has an emphasis on arts and sciences. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has conferred its accreditation upon SVU.
