Salem, Virginia is home to the prestigious private liberal arts college that is Roanoke College. Approximately 2,000 students from approximately 40 different states and 30 different countries make up its student body. The college provides students with the opportunity to pursue one of 35 majors, 57 minors and concentrations, as well as pre-professional programmes. Roanoke is one of 280 colleges in the United States that has a chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honour society, and it also confers bachelor's degrees in the arts, the sciences, and business administration. Roanoke College is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and competes in the NCAA Division III level of college athletics. The college has varsity teams competing in eleven different sports for men and ten different sports for women. The Maroons are the athletic teams that represent Roanoke College, and their mascot is Rooney, a maroon-tailed hawk.
