Blacksburg, Virginia is home to the main campus of Virginia Tech, which is also known formally as the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Institution and informally as VT, VA Tech, or VPI. Virginia Tech is a public land-grant research university. In addition, it possesses educational facilities in six different districts around the state, a research facility in Punta Cana, which is located in the Dominican Republic, and a study-abroad location in Riva San Vitale, which is located in Switzerland. Virginia Tech is considered a senior military college thanks to its Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programme. There are around 34,400 students enrolled in one of Virginia Tech's 280 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. It is ranked among the top 50 universities in the United States for total research expenditures, among the top 25 in computer and information sciences, and among the top 10 in engineering; the latter two rankings are the highest in the state. The university also manages a research portfolio that is worth 522 million dollars. It falls under the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very high research activity." The number of students enrolled at Virginia Tech in 2015 placed it as the state's second-largest public university. VT has been responsible for the education of 280 Fulbright Scholars, two Rhodes Scholars, four Marshall Scholars, and 38 Goldwater Scholars. Eight recipients of the Medal of Honor, 97 flag officers, two governors of US states, two astronauts, and one billionaire are among its former students and faculty members. A total of three people who have been awarded the Nobel Prize and one person who has been awarded the MacArthur Fellowship have attended or taught at the university. As of the year 2015, there were more than 244,000 live VT alumni all around the world. The athletic teams of the university participate in Division I of the NCAA and are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They are known as the Virginia Tech Hokies.
