HAMPTON UNIVERSITY

In Hampton, Virginia, you'll find the private, historically Black Hampton University, which also functions as a research university. After the conclusion of the American Civil War, Black and White leaders of the American Missionary Association came together in 1868 to establish what was then known as the Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School with the intention of providing freedmen with access to an education. The Hampton University Museum is the oldest museum of the African diaspora in the United States, and it is also the oldest museum in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The museum is located on the campus of Hampton University. The primary campus of Hampton University can be found in Hampton, Virginia, on 314 acres along the banks of the Hampton River. It was founded and was initially directed by former Union General Samuel Chapman Armstrong. The university provides a total of ninety different programmes for students to enrol in, including fifty bachelor's degree programmes, twenty-five master's degree programmes, and nine doctoral degree programmes. In addition to having courses available online, this university also has a branch campus located in Virginia Beach. There are sixteen research centres located on the campus of Hampton University, one of which is the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute. This institute is the largest free-standing facility of its kind anywhere in the world. According to the Carnegie Classification system, Hampton University is a "R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity" institution.
