The United States Marine Corps maintains its own professional military education university system, which is known as Marine Corps University. To be able to confer Master's Degrees, the institution has received accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Marine Corps Command and Staff College's Art of War Studies programme was launched on August 1st, 1989, by General Alfred M. Gray, Jr., the 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps. In order to prepare leaders for the national security environment and to preserve, promote, and showcase the history and heritage of the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps War College's mission today is to develop, deliver, and evaluate professional military education and training through resident and nonresident programmes. Through the study of national military strategy, theatre strategy and plans, and military support to those strategies within the context of national security policies and decision-making, its graduates are equipped for senior leadership roles of increasing complexity. A Master of Strategic Studies (MSS) degree is awarded to graduates. Marine Corps Command and Staff College: CSC educates and prepares its joint, international, and interagency professionals to generate proficient warfighting commanders for 21st Century security problems. This includes the study of history, language, and culture. Students have the option of finishing the prerequisites for a Master of Military Studies (MMS) degree at Command and Staff College. School of Advanced Warfighting: For chosen field grade officers who have completed the Marine Corps or a school offered by a sister service's command and staff college, the School of Advanced Warfighting offers a graduate-level professional military education as a next step. For the operational level of conflict, the course builds complex problem-solving and decision-making abilities. A Master of Operational Studies (MOS) degree is awarded to graduates.
MCU is not ranked by U.S. News & World Report or other major university rankings. However, it is considered to be one of the top military education institutions in the world.
