In Lynchburg, Virginia, there is a private evangelical university called Liberty University (LU). The largest private non-profit university in the United States and one of the largest Christian universities in the world by total student enrollment is Liberty University, which was founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell Sr. and Elmer L. Towns. The majority of its students enrol in online courses; in 2020, for instance, the institution had 80,000 online students and roughly 15,000 in its residential programme. There are 17 colleges at Liberty University, including a school of law and osteopathic medicine. The Division I NCAA athletic teams at Liberty are collectively known as the Liberty Flames. While the majority of their other sports teams play in the ASUN Conference, their college football team is an NCAA Division I FBS Independent. The university's curriculum has a strong conservative Evangelical bent, and its three obligatory Bible studies for undergrads reflect this. Alcohol usage and cohabitation are forbidden by the "Liberty Way," the university's honour code. The university is a significant player in Republican politics and is referred to as a "bastion of the Christian right." The world's largest seminary, the Rawlings School of Divinity at Liberty University, has more than 5,700 students enrolled in more than 90 different academic programmes.
