Collegedale, Tennessee is home to the Seventh-day Adventist Southern Adventist University, a private institution of higher education. The Southern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists is the entity that owns it and manages its operations. Graysville Academy was the first Seventh-day Adventist school in the southern United States and was established in 1892 in Graysville, Tennessee, under that name. The school moved to its current location in 1916 and changed its name to Southern Junior College as a result of the need for more space to accommodate future growth. In 1944, Southern changed its name to Southern Missionary College and began conferring baccalaureate degrees to its students. Both the awarding of master's degrees and the adoption of the school's current name took place in the year 1996. Degrees ranging from associate to doctorate are available to students at Southern University. The university and all of its programmes have received accreditation from a variety of different organisations, one of which is the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACDS). It is one of only two schools in the country that offers a bachelor's degree in biblical archaeology, and Southern University's Institute of Archaeology is one of the institutions that grants the degree. It is considered to be the most conservative of the Seventh-day Adventist schools in North America due to its emphasis on Adventist beliefs as well as conservative religious and social practises. The college runs a health food store, as well as a wellness centre and a radio station (WSMC-FM). In 2010, there were 3,053 students enrolled, which represents the highest number to date.
