Nashville, Tennessee's Vanderbilt University is a private research university sometimes known as Vandy or VU. It was established in 1873 and is named in honour of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a shipping and rail mogul who gave the school its initial $1 million endowment in the expectation that his contribution and the university's overall mission would aid in the healing of the sectional scars caused by the Civil War. Over 100 nationalities and 13,800 students from the US are enrolled at Vanderbilt. According to the category "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very high research activity," Vanderbilt is one of the best universities in the country. The Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities, the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center, and Dyer Observatory are just a few of the research institutions and centres connected to the university. In 2016, the once-university-affiliated Vanderbilt University Medical Center separated into a separate organisation. All of the university's facilities, with the exception of the off-campus observatory, are located on its 330-acre (1.3 km2) campus in the middle of Nashville, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the city centre. During the early half of the 20th century, the university was home to the Fugitives and Southern Agrarians, who among other things helped reinvigorate Southern literature. Since its inception in 1966, Vanderbilt has served as the Southeastern Conference's sole private institution. 54 current and past members of the United States Congress, 18 U.S. ambassadors, 13 governors, 11 billionaires, seven Nobel Prize winners, two vice presidents of the United States, and two justices of the U.S. Supreme Court are among the alumni, faculty, and staff of Vanderbilt. Other notable graduates include four foreign heads of state, 27 Rhodes Scholars, two Academy Award winners, one Grammy Award winner, six MacArthur Fellows, and three Pulitzer Prize winners. More than 145,000 former students of Vanderbilt have formed 40 alumni groups all across the world.
