Cleveland, Tennessee's Lee University is a private Christian university. When it first opened its doors in 1918, it was the Church of God Bible Training School, a little Bible school with only twelve students and one teacher. With a Bible college and junior college on its current location, the school expanded and became Lee College in 1948. Twenty years later, Lee obtained four-year liberal arts college accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Lee changed from attending a college to a comprehensive university in 1997. The College of Arts & Sciences, the Helen DeVos College of Education, the School of Business, the School of Music, the School of Nursing, and the School of Religion are the six colleges and schools that make up the institution. The Division of Adult Learning of the university also provides online degrees. The second president and recipient of the university's name is F.J. Lee. Lee University's singing programmes and graduates are well known. Voices of Lee, an a cappella vocal group led by Danny Murray, participated in the inaugural season of Nick Lachey's NBC a cappella competition series The Sing-Off in 2009, where they placed third. Several former students have also achieved success in well-known singing competitions on television. On American Idol's sixth season, Phil Stacey came in sixth. Alumnus Jordan Smith won season nine of NBC's The Voice in the same year that Clark Beckham finished second in season 14 of American Idol. Brooke Simpson finished third on The Voice's thirteenth season in December 2017. The Lee University Festival Choir, a unique choir made up of singers from each of the choral organisations, gave a performance during President Barack Obama's inauguration in Washington, D.C. in January 2013
