Winston-Salem, North Carolina is home to the prestigious private research institution that is Wake Forest University. The university was established in 1834, and it got its name from the town of Wake Forest, which is located about forty miles north of Raleigh, North Carolina. Since the university's relocation to its current location in 1956, the main campus of the university, known as the Reynolda Campus, has been situated to the north of the central business district of Winston-Salem. There are two campuses that make up the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist medical centre: the older one can be found close to the Ardmore area in central Winston-Salem, while the newer site can be found at the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter in the city's centre. In addition, the university maintains a presence in the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials as well as the Biotech Plaza located in the Innovation Quarter. Both in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the main campus is located, and in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Graduate School of Management of the university may be found. The Wake Forest University School of Law, Wake Forest University School of Divinity, Wake Forest University School of Business, Wake Forest Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Wake Forest University School of Medicine are some of the undergraduate and graduate colleges and schools that are part of Wake Forest University (WFU). Over 250 different student clubs and organisations, such as fraternities and sororities, intramural sports, a student newspaper, and a student radio station, are available for Wake Forest students to join and engage in. According to the most recent revision of the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, Wake Forest University has been given the "R-2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity" designation. A total of 15 Rhodes Scholars, including 13 since 1986, four Marshall Scholars, 15 Truman Scholars, and 92 participants of the Fulbright Program since 1993 are among the alumni of Wake Forest University. In the Piedmont Triad area, Forsyth County, where WFU is located, WFU ranks in the top five major employers. The author Maya Angelou, the mathematician Phillip Griffiths, Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan, former sportscaster and athlete Billy Packer, athletes Chris Paul, Tim Duncan, Muggsy Bogues, Brian Piccolo, and Arnold Palmer, and CEO Charlie Ergen are all notable alumni of Wake Forest University. The athletic teams at Wake Forest University are known as the Demon Deacons, and they compete in all 16 intercollegiate sports that are offered at the Division I level of the NCAA. In addition, Wake Forest was one of the original schools to join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
