In Raleigh, North Carolina, Shaw University is a private historically black Baptist institution. The oldest HBCU to start teaching courses in the South of the United States was Shaw University, which was established on December 1st, 1865. A freedmen's theological class that met in the Guion Hotel gave rise to the institution. The Raleigh Institute lasted there until 1870 after moving to a sizable wooden structure at the intersection of Blount and Cabarrus Streets downtown Raleigh the next year. The school changed its name to the Shaw Collegiate Institute in 1870 and relocated to its current site on the former home of Confederate General Barringer in tribute to Elijah Shaw. Shaw University was formally chartered by the State of North Carolina in 1875. The main campus is located on 24 acres in Raleigh's East Raleigh-South Park Historic District. On Rock Quarry Rd., Shaw also owns and manages a 35-acre farm. Historic structures on campus, including as Estey Hall and Shaw Hall, were created by renowned Raleigh architect George S. H. Appleget and exhibit Second Empire and Italianate architectural designs. Leonard Hall, a twin-turreted Romanesque Revival-style structure, and a number of other buildings with Brutalist-style constructions are examples of other architectural styles found on campus. Shaw is renowned for numerous noteworthy historical accomplishments. It was the first university in the United States to provide a four-year medical programme, a pharmacy programme, and a law programme for formerly enslaved people. On the Shaw University campus, the nation's first facility dedicated to higher education for African American women was constructed and is still there. One president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, three founders of other HBCUs in North Carolina, as well as a large number of artists, lawyers, politicians, and educators all attended Shaw. Shaw was a founding member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the oldest African American athletic association in the United States and a member of the NCAA Division II, along with Howard University, Hampton University, Lincoln University, and Virginia Union University. Football, basketball (both men's and women's), tennis (both men's and women's), and volleyball have all been won by the university in the CIAA.
