ABOUT

North Carolina Central University, also known simply as NC Central, is a historically black, public university located in Durham, North Carolina. It is classified as a liberal arts institution and receives funding from the state. It was established in 1909 by Dr. James E. Shepard in association with the Chautauqua movement, and it was backed by private contributions from donors located in both the North and the South. It was renamed Durham State Normal School and integrated into the state system in 1923, the same year that it initially received financial support from the state. In the late 1930s and 1940s, the university expanded its offerings to include graduate programmes in the arts and sciences, as well as professional schools of law and library science. This institution was given its current name, North Carolina Central University, and authorised by the state legislature as a regional university in the year 1969. Since 1972, it has been an integral element of the University of North Carolina system, and it currently provides educational opportunities at the bachelor's, master's, professional, and doctorate levels. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund counts the university as one of its member institutions.
