In Durham, North Carolina, there is a private research institution called Duke University. The school, which was established in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers in the modern town of Trinity, relocated to Durham in 1892. James Buchanan Duke, a tobacco and electric power entrepreneur, founded The Duke Endowment in 1924. The organisation later changed its name to Washington Duke in memory of Duke's late father.
