ABOUT

The town of Boone, North Carolina is home to the Appalachian State Institution, which is a public university. In the year 1899, brothers B. B. and D. D. Dougherty, along with the spouse of the latter, Lillie Shull Dougherty, established it first as a teaching college. 1967 marked the beginning of the university's expansion into new academic areas, and in 1971 it became a member of the University of North Carolina System. More than 20,600 students are now enrolled at the university. It provides over 150 different bachelor's degree programmes, in addition to 70 different graduate degree programmes and two different doctoral degree programmes. The university is comprised of eight different colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Walker College of Businesses, the Reich College of Education, the College of Fine and Applied Arts, the Beaver College of Health Sciences, the Honors College, the Hayes School of Music, and University College. The Hayes School of Music is the university's music school. With the exception of a few sports, such as wrestling, which compete in the Southern Conference, the Athletic Teams all participate in the Sun Belt Conference's competitions. The teams are collectively referred to as the Mountaineers.
