Elon University is a non-public institution of higher education located in Elon, North Carolina. Elon University was established in 1889 as Elon College. Today, the university is comprised of six schools, the majority of which award bachelor's degrees and a number of which award master's degrees or professional doctorate degrees. Elon University is a private institution of higher education that has a suburban campus that spans a total area of 656 acres (265 ha) and is located in the Piedmont region of the state of North Carolina. There are fewer than twenty percent of undergraduate students at Elon University who were born and raised in the state of North Carolina. The intercollegiate athletic programmes at Elon University are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and participate at the highest level of NCAA competition, Division I.
