Winston-Salem, North Carolina is home to an institution of higher learning devoted to the arts known as the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). It is able to provide diplomas for high school, undergraduate studies, and graduate work. It was the first public arts conservatory in the United States and was initially established in 1963 by Governor Terry Sanford of North Carolina under the name North Carolina School of the Arts. In addition to having received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the institution is also the owner of the Stevens Center, which is located in the heart of Downtown Winston-Salem. The institution is divided into five different professional schools: the School of Dance, the School of Design & Production (which also offers a High School Visual Arts Program), the School of Drama, and the School of Filmmaking.
