UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - RIO GRANDE VALLEY

The southernmost institution of the University of Texas System is the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), a public research university with numerous campuses spread over the Texas region of the Rio Grande Valley. Following the merger of the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas-Pan American, the Texas Legislature established the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in 2013. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley enrolled 29,619 students for the fall semester of 2019, making it the fourth-largest academic institution in the University of Texas system in terms of student enrolment and the ninth-largest university in the state of Texas overall. 89.2% of UTRGV's students identify as Hispanic in 2018, making it one of the largest institutions in the US with a primarily Hispanic student body. Almost all of these students are Mexican Americans. In 2020, it was categorized as belonging to "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity.
