Georgetown, Texas is home to Southwestern University, also known simply as SU, a private institution that focuses on the liberal arts. Southwestern is either the oldest college or university in Texas, depending on which definition you choose, having originated in 1873 as a revival of collegiate charters originally awarded in 1840. Southwestern University provides a total of 40 different bachelor's degree programmes, including multidisciplinary and pre-professional studies, as well as degrees in the arts, sciences, visual arts, and music. It has been traditionally associated with the United Methodist Church, and it holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as with the National Association of Schools of Music.
