University, Ohio University. Congress established the Confederation in 1787 and opened for enrollment in 1809 as the first Ohio university established by an Act of Congress. The university had more than 18,000 students enrolled in Athens as of autumn 2020 and slightly more than 28,000 students across the entire campus. Spread across 155 acres (0.63 km2) of land, the first building of Founders Hall opened in 1968. The Ohio State University is a satellite campus of Newark, Ohio.
