In the city of Fairborn, Ohio, lies the public research institution that is Wright State University. It first opened its doors in 1964 as a branch campus of Miami University and Ohio State University. In 1967, it separated into its own institution and was given its current name in honour of Orville and Wilbur Wright, who were aviation pioneers and residents of Dayton at the time. The university is recognised as belonging to the category of "R2: Doctorate Universities - High research activity," and it confers the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels of education. The Wright State Raiders, the school's varsity sports teams, are members of the Horizon League and compete at the Division I level of the NCAA.
