Located in Youngstown, Ohio, Youngstown State University, sometimes known as YSU or Youngstown State, is a public institution of higher education. It was established in 1908, and two decades later, in 1931, it changed its name to Youngstown College. In 1944, it applied for accreditation through the North Central Association. Youngstown College experienced tremendous growth in response to shifting educational demands in the Mahoning Valley. The name of the institution was changed to Youngstown University in 1955, and then to Youngstown State University in 1967. Youngstown University was formerly known as Youngstown College. The University of Ohio System extends all the way to Youngstown, which is home to Youngstown State University. Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication, Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences and Education, Dr. Dominic A. and Helen M. Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and the Warren P. Williamson, Jr. College of Business Administration are the five undergraduate colleges that make up the University. Other undergraduate colleges include the Dr. Dominic A. and Helen M. Bitonte College of Health and Human Services. Over 11,000 students are enrolled in studies ranging from the undergraduate to the PhD level at Youngstown State University, which has more than 150 undergraduate degree programmes and 50 graduate degree programmes. The university boasts more than 125,000 graduates living all throughout the United States and the rest of the world, in addition to its current student body. The athletic programmes of Youngstown State University are all part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I and are collectively referred to as the Penguins. Except for football, which competes in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference; bowling, which competes in the Southland Bowling League; and lacrosse, which competes in the Mid-American Conference; the university is a member of the Horizon League in all varsity sports. The exceptions to this membership are football, which competes in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference; and lacrosse (MAC).
