The National Association of Schools of Art and Design has granted accreditation to The Art Academy of Cincinnati, a private art and design college in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was established as a division of the University of Cincinnati in 1869 as the McMicken School of Design. Later, in 1887, it changed its name to the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the museum school of the Cincinnati Art Museum. The Art Academy of Cincinnati legally withdrew from the museum in 1998 and established itself as a stand-alone school of art and design. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Design, Illustration, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Print Media, and Sculpture, as well as the Master of Arts in Art Education, which is taught during the summer semesters, are the degrees that are awarded. In the fall of 2005, The Art Academy relocated to its current location at 1212 Jackson St. in the Over-the-Rhine district. This decision was crucial in the rebuilding and regeneration of Over-the-Rhine as an artistic area. The new building offers students 24-hour access and 24-hour security. In their junior and senior years, students are guaranteed studio space. The 12th and Jackson St. building also has a lecture hall, learning services centre, larger classrooms, computer labs, a student commons area, and an open air atrium that connects two once separate buildings. The United States Green Building Council certified the Art Academy facility as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building in 2008. (USGBC). Freshmen from out of town who are enrolled in the Art Academy must live there in AAC housing at the nearby intersection of 12th and Vine streets. Freshmen from the area can also apply for spaces. There are twelve units with full kitchens and washer/dryers available for 28 students. Additionally available and residing on the property is a resident advisor.
The Art Academy of Cincinnati is not ranked by U.S. News & World Report. However, it is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
