FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY OF STEUBENVILLE

The Franciscan University of Steubenville may be found in Steubenville, Ohio, and it is a private, Catholic university. As of the fall 2019 semester, the institution had a total enrollment of 3,040 students, including 2,317 students enrolled on campus, and offered a total of 40 undergraduate and 8 graduate degree programmes. The university has the highest number of students majoring in theology, catechetics, and philosophy of any Catholic university in the United States, with 97 percent of the student body identifying as Catholic. At the behest of Bishop Mussio, the first bishop of the Diocese of Steubenville, the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular founded the institution in 1946 under the name College of Steubenville. When Fr. Michael Scanlan, T.O.R., was elected president in 1974, he immediately set in motion a number of significant changes designed to realign the institution with its Catholic roots. When the institution was granted university status in 1980, it changed its name to the University of Steubenville. In 1986, it accepted the name Franciscan University of Steubenville as its official name.
