Oxford, Ohio is home to the public research university that goes by the name Miami University (also known as Miami of Ohio or simply Miami). Following in the footsteps of Ohio University, which was established in 1804, the university was established in 1809, making it the second-oldest university in the state of Ohio (behind Ohio University, which was founded in 1804) and the tenth oldest public university (and the 32nd oldest university overall) in the United States. The system of the school includes not only the primary campus located in Oxford but also regional campuses in the surrounding areas of Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester. The Greek community at Miami University dates back many years, and the school's reputation as the "Mother of Fraternities" comes from the fact that it was the birthplace of five different social Greek-letter organisations. At present, Miami University is home to over fifty different chapters of both fraternities and sororities, and roughly one-third of the undergraduate student body is comprised of members of the Greek community. On the list of the top college towns in the United States that was compiled by Forbes in 2016, the city of Oxford was ranked first. The Miami RedHawks are the name given to all of the University of Miami's athletic teams, all of which participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I competition. With the exception of ice hockey, in which they compete in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, all of their varsity sports participate in the Mid-American Conference.
