Private research university Mercer University has its main campus in Macon, Georgia. It is the oldest private university in the state and enrols more than 9,000 students in its 12 colleges and schools, which include liberal arts and sciences, business, engineering, education, music, the college of professional advancement, law, theology, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and health professions. Mercer Institute was founded in 1833 and was granted university status in 1837. The oldest collegiate honours society in the country, Phi Beta Kappa, has a chapter at Mercer and is a member of the Georgia Research Alliance. The historic (main) campus of Mercer is located in Macon. A graduate and professional campus is located in Atlanta. The School of Medicine includes four-year campuses in Savannah and Columbus. Additionally, Mercer has regional academic hubs in Henry and Douglas counties, a law school on its own campus in Macon, teaching hospitals in Savannah, Columbus, a university press, and the Grand Opera House, a performing arts venue, all in Macon, as well as the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins. The medical, pharmacy, nursing, and health professions programmes offered by Mercer University in Macon, Atlanta, Savannah, and Columbus are housed in the Mercer University Health Sciences Center. For over 25 years, Mercer has been listed as one of Georgia's top two private institutions by U.S. News & World Report. Mercer is the 6th-highest ranked private research university in the South and is ranked 160th overall among the 389 National Universities by U.S. News & World Report (2021 edition), 49th in terms of undergraduate instruction, and 35th in terms of best value for the money. The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for 2015 included 113 institutions, including Mercer, who were recognised for their commitment to community service by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. For 18 years, the Princeton Review has listed Mercer as one of the top colleges in the country. R2: Doctoral Universities - High research activity is how Mercer is categorised. There are 12 Governors, four Senators, two Pulitzer Prize winners, two Rhodes Scholars, and a U.S. Attorney General among the alumni of Mercer University. All university-supported sports, with the exception of women's sand volleyball, which is not sanctioned by the SoCon and instead participates in the ASUN Conference, are part of Mercer's NCAA Division I athletic programme. The school fields teams in eight men's and ten women's sports.

• Residence halls: Mercer has 10 residence halls, which house approximately 2,500 students. Residence halls offer a variety of room types, including singles, doubles, triples, and quads.
