Macon, Georgia is home to the primary campus of the public university that goes by the name Middle Georgia State University. It is a component of the University System of Georgia and provides educational opportunities to students across its five campuses located throughout Middle Georgia as well as online. The Middle Georgia State University is authorised to confer associate, baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees because it holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Middle Georgia State College was initially established in 2013 as a result of the merger of Middle Georgia College and Macon State College. The institution's former name was Middle Georgia College. Middle Georgia State University can trace its history back to 1884 thanks to the legacy institutions that came before it. The current name of the institution was chosen in 2015 to reflect the institution's elevation to the status of state university.
