Statesboro is home to its main campus, and it also has campuses at the Armstrong Campus in Savannah and the Liberty Campus in Hinesville. Georgia Southern, the largest centre of higher learning in the southern portion of Georgia, is the fifth largest institution in the University System of Georgia and was founded in 1906 as a land grant college. Over 140 different academic majors are available at the institution, which provides a wide range of baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral programmes. There are around 26,000 students enrolled at the university overall, representing all 50 states and 85 other countries. The University System of Georgia classifies Georgia Southern as a comprehensive university and one of the "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity" institutions. The Georgia Southern University's bald eagle mascot, along with 85 other birds, 67 reptiles, 70 amphibians, and eight mammals, call the Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center on the Statesboro Campus home. The Southeastern Trust for Parks and Land donated 1,400 acres of the Effingham Wetlands to the university, which also oversees them (STPAL). Throughout academic semesters, The George-Anne, the university's main publication, is released twice a week. Additionally, there are publications run by students, such as The Reflector, a student-run news publication from Georgia Southern Academic, and The Miscellany, a literary arts publication that accepted submissions from both the student population and the wider university community until 2016.
