ABOUT
With its main campus in Athens, Georgia, the Institution of Georgia (UGA or Georgia) is a public land-grant research university. One of the country's first public universities, it was established in 1785. The flagship institution of the University System of Georgia, it has been named one of the top public universities in the country and is known as one of the "Public Ivies," a publicly funded institution that is thought to offer an education of a calibre equivalent to that of the Ivy League. While the ACT Assessment Student Report places UGA admissions in the "Highly Selective" category, the highest rating, the university is listed as belonging to the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" group and having "more selective" undergraduate admissions. Atlanta and Lawrenceville both host a satellite campus for the university. Throughout the state, the institution runs a number of service and outreach locations. The university spans 41,539 acres across 30 Georgia counties (168.10 km2). The university also owns three worldwide residential education and research facilities, which are situated at Oxford University in Oxford, England, at Cortona, Italy, and at Monteverde, Costa Rica. It also owns a residential education and research facility in Washington, DC. Nearly 800 student organisations make up the student life, including academic associations, honour societies, debate societies, publications, publications, cultural groups, student government organisations, religious groups, social groups, and fraternities, as well as volunteer and community service programmes, philanthropic groups, and others. The college athletic teams of the University of Georgia compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Southeastern Conference under the moniker Georgia Bulldogs (SEC). The university's varsity teams have won 45 national championships, 264 individual national championships, 172 conference championships, and 56 Olympic medals throughout the course of their more than 120-year history.
