In Atlanta, Georgia, there is a private research university called Emory University. The second-oldest private college in Georgia, Emory was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1836 under the name "Emory College" in memory of Methodist bishop John Emory (after Mercer University, founded in 1833). School of Law, Emory College of Arts and Sciences, School of Medicine, Oxford College, Laney Graduate School, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Goizueta Business School, Rollins School of Public Health, and Candler School of Theology are the nine academic divisions that make up Emory University. The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering is jointly run by Peking University in Beijing, China, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Emory University. Together with Nanjing University, the university runs the Confucius Institute in Atlanta. A growing faculty research collaboration between Emory and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology exists (KAIST). Students at Emory University come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, five American territories, as well as more than one hundred other nations. Emory Healthcare, which includes the Emory University Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown, is the state of Georgia's largest healthcare organisation. The university is home to the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Winship Cancer Institute, and several disease and vaccine research facilities. The National Ebola Training and Education Center of the U.S. Health Department is primarily coordinated by Emory University. The university is one of four organisations participating in the Tuberculosis Research Units Program of the NIAID. The university is home to the International Association of National Public Health Institutes, and the American Cancer Society and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are national affiliate organisations nearby. The Carter Center, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the institution are partners. The 15th-largest endowment among American colleges and institutions belongs to Emory University. According to the CWTS Leiden Ranking, the university is ranked as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" and is praised for its strong record in science. In terms of research and development (R&D) spending, the National Science Foundation placed the university 36th out of all American academic institutions. Emory University was chosen in 1995 to join the Association of American Universities, a grouping of 66 elite research universities in North America. Two Prime Ministers, nine university presidents, 11 members of the US Congress, two Nobel Peace Prize winners, a US Vice President, a US Speaker of the House, and a US Supreme Court Justice are among the Emory professors and alumni. Other prominent graduates include six Pulitzer Prize winners, 21 Rhodes Scholars, Emmy Award winners, CEOs of Fortune 500 firms, chiefs of state, and other top figures in international politics. More than 149,000 alumni from Emory have formed 75 alumni clubs in 20 different countries.
