Fayetteville, Arkansas is home to the public land-grant research institution known as the University of Arkansas (often abbreviated as UA, UArk, or UA). The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville is the state's largest educational institution and serves as the system's flagship campus. Classes were initially held for the first time on January 22, 1872, and the university officially changed its name to what it is now in 1899. Arkansas Industrial University was established in 1871. It is well known for the exceptional programmes that it offers in the fields of architecture, agriculture (especially animal science and poultry science), communication disorders, creative writing, history, law (especially agricultural law), and Middle Eastern studies. Additionally, it is renowned for its business school, the supply chain management programme of which was ranked the best in North America by Gartner in July of 2020. The University of Arkansas was rated thirteenth on the list of institutions with the most graduates employed by top Fortune 500 businesses, according to a report that was compiled by DegreeChoices and published by Forbes in 2021. In Fayetteville, Arkansas, the university campus encompasses a total area of 512 acres (2.07 km2) and contains a total of 378 individual buildings. One of the most well-known examples of campus architecture is Old Main, which was the first permanent academic structure ever constructed. There are more than 200 different academic programmes. There were 27,559 students registered for the fall semester of 2019. There are typically 19 students for every member of the teaching staff. The Arkansas Razorbacks, which represent the University of Arkansas's athletic programmes, are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and participate in NCAA Division I. The Razorbacks field eight men's teams and eleven women's teams across thirteen different sports. Traditions at the university include "Calling the Hogs" at sporting events and "the Senior Walk," which is more than 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) of campus walkway inscribed with the names of all UA graduates since 1871. The university is well-known for its traditions. The Chi Omega sorority got its start at the University of Arkansas, and the university is famous for having the organization's birthplace.
