Ashland, Oregon is home to Southern Oregon University (SOU), a public institution of higher learning. It was established in 1872 with the name Ashland Academy, and it has occupied its current location since 1926. Prior to 1997, it was known by a total of nine different names until adopting its current moniker. Its Ashland campus spans 175 acres and is located just 21 kilometres (14 miles) from Oregon's state line with California. The United States Green Building Council has awarded the LEED certification to five of Southern Oregon University's newest buildings. The Southern Oregon University serves as the administrative centre for both Jefferson Public Radio and Rogue Valley Community Television, which are both public access stations. Since 2015, the SOU Board of Trustees has been responsible for the governance of the university. The Oregon Center for the Arts at SOU, Business, Communication and the Environment, Education, Health and Leadership, Humanities and Culture, Social Sciences, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and Undergraduate Studies are the seven academic divisions that make up Southern Oregon University. The Oregon Center for the Arts at SOU is a part of Southern Oregon University. There are around 90 different undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programmes available. The majority of SOU's academic programmes follow a quarter structure that consists of 10 weeks. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which is found in the heart of Ashland, works closely with the Oregon Center for the Arts at the nearby university. Both the American Association of State Colleges and Universities as well as the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges are organisations that Southern Oregon University is affiliated with.
SOU is ranked #64 in the 2022-2023 edition of U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges" list for regional universities in the West. The university is also ranked #10 in the "Best Value Schools" category for regional universities in the West.
